the super 8 reel
In August 2024, a Super 8 workshop at Les Ruches: a color reel (Kodak Vision3 50D) shot in the neighborhood, then scanned frame by frame. You’ll find it in the film, and all over this site.

During the workshops, a black-and-white roll of film went from hand to hand: the young people photograph one another between takes.

At Les Ruches, in Marseille, camera in hand, young people interview their neighbors after the destruction of the neighboring Petit Séminaire estate: the fields of before, the sports field that disappeared, the outings that bring people together, the cracks in the buildings, the neighborhood dog, and their dreams for what comes next.
Built from images shot with residents and words gathered over the workshops, the film tells a story rooted in lived experience: memories of the Petit Séminaire, neighborhood anecdotes, ways of helping one another, ways of living together, but also rifts and new beginnings.
The young people wrote the questions in the workshops, chose whom to interview, held the camera and the microphone. Across generations, the process brings out what makes community in everyday life, and how bonds hold up or change when the neighborhood is under construction.
